The news that the central government in principle may not be averse to extend the Aadhhar deadline to link the card to bank accounts, mobile phones, etc may sound to be a welcome news but it appears that it may be one strategy it may be adopting while from the back doors, it may be increasing the pressure on the institutions to speed it up.

Karti Chidambaram case & Arrest: Indrani spoke of $7L bribe

Indrani Mukerjea, the erstwhile owner of the television company INX Media, now  at the heart of the CBI case against Karti Chidambaram is reported to have  told the Enforcement Directorate that she and Peter Mukerjea had met former Union Minister P Chidambaram to seek government approval to foreign investment proposals worth around Rs. 300 crore in the company.


Ms Mukerjea in a separate statement to  the CBI that was recorded before a magistrate is again reported to have  linked the former Union Finance Minister to the CBI case filed against Karti Chidambaram.

This is said to have resulted in his arrest on Wednesday morning, ( 28th Feb 2018), when he landed at the Chennai Airport returning from London.

The CBI alleges Karti received kickbacks in 2007 to clear the foreign investment by using the influence of his father, Chidambaram, who was then the Union Finance Minister.

 At that time, the INX Media was owned by Peter and Indrani Mukerjea. The couple are in jail  since 2015 on being charged with the  murder of  her daughter Sheena Bora since 2015.

NDTV reports that investigators have confirmed to them that the Ms. Mukerjea confirmed the payment of $700000 in her statement recorded before the magistrate. NDTV further reports that it has accessed the invoices which the investigating agencies claim to be the proof of the payments made to Karti Chidambaram. The investigating agencies claim they got the invoices after they had effected the arrest of Karti's chartered accountant two weeks ago.


The former Union Minister, Chidambaram and his son Karti have denied the allegations, terming it a case of "political vendetta". Their defense is   that it was Mr Chidambaram, who as Finance Minister in 2013, had first ordered a probe by the Serious Frauds Office into allegations against the INX Group.

Even though the high court in London had increased the allowance, for the present, it has refrained from revoking the freeze order on his global assets. However, it is left to anybody's guesses what view the court would take on his appeal to release this freeze.

The moral of the story is for those who can do so, it is not unfair to take massive loans from the Indian Banks, convert the loans into assets outside the country in any safe heaven, leave the country and claim that as assets as though they were earned out of sweat.

While the banks have to keep counting the NPAs, the Reserve Bank is busy is redefining the NPA norms and the government talks tough in theory but in reality has been thinking of recapitilising with instruments, which has been going in circles, like the business cycles.

Yesterday, (29^th Jan 2018), I received notification on my cell phone of a deposit into my account of R82 000. I could not work out who would have deposited it, only a reference J002.

At midday yesterday I received a call from (so called) “Revenue dept" stating that they had erroneously deposited a (possibly to fool by trying to make it genuine) VAT Return of R82 000 into my bank account, Reference J002 (to make it appear genuine) and that they needed me to reverse this payment (note the choice of words) as it should have done to TLB Towers.

They faxed through to me a very official looking letter with all the information and their banking details. Last night I went into my banking to do the transfer but decided to print a bank statement first. I saw that the R82 000 was in my account but still "uncleared".

Gut feelings were quite strong so I did not reverse the amount but waited till this morning to phone my bank. They could not identify who the deposit came from. I then asked to be transferred to the risk/fraud division and explained everything to them, (smart decision).

   The investigators phoned me a short while ago to let me know that this was a scam,

 1)    The bank account that I was to transfer into was a personal account with no funds in presently.

2)    They also expect that the cheque deposited into my account will be a stolen cheque

3)    And will bounce and they would reverse it in a few days.

This means that I would have "paid back" the money into someone's private account, they would have withdrawn the money, and then the cheque would have bounced, leaving me with R82 000 less in my account, (stealing acquires new dimensions).

US government shuts down with partisan blame game heating up!

The federal government has shut down at the stroke of midnight Friday, 19th Jan, 2018:U.S.time zone). That has halted all but the most essential operations ; an immediate fall out of this is the spoiling of Donald Trump's first year celebrations, for which he had planned to depart to his 'Mar-a-Lago' club, where he was to participate in high-dollar fund raising program to commemorate the completion of his first year of being office. 

In case the  Congress can't reach a deal on continuing resolution, the  U.S. government will face a potential shutdown the effect of which is "non-essential" services provided by information bureaus, national parks, as well as other employees across the federal government will close. Essential operations pertaining to national security, law and order, and emergency life-and-death services will continue to function, as will agencies and services that are not funded through congressional appropriations. This includes immigration and border patrol, the US Postal Service and special counsel Robert Mueller's office.

Late hour and last-minute negotiations did not yield any positive results as Senate Democrats blocked a four-week stopgap extension in a late-night vote, causing the fourth government shutdown in a quarter century. Behind the scenes parleys, however, leading Republicans and Democrats were trying to work out a compromise to avert a lengthy shutdown.

Nonetheless, Wall Street shrugged off by  choosing to climb to record levels, with the main stock indices enjoying a third successive week of gains, as participants appeared unfazed by the risk of  the shut down.

This, however, was not the case with the foreign exchange markets with the dollar index struggling to stay afloat of a three-year against a basket of peer currencies.

This is in contract of the last government shut down that took for 16 days in October, 2013, which brought a sharp fall in the S&p 500.

In effect, the stock and bond yields moved in opposite direction with the gold prices in the commodity space pushed up by $5 to $1332 an ounce, even though still gold is not glittering for the reaons the precious metal is down by $6 over the week.

Actor Rajinikanth, crowned as the 'Super Star' by his fans  in the Kollywood industry, gave a parting shot before the closing hours and year, 2017 that he would enter into politics, read as T.N. politics for the moment by announcing that he would float a New Party and contest the next state election. He proposes to contest in all the 234 seats assuming that there would not be anymore bifurcation of assembly seat.

His approach would be to bring in nil-prejudice casteless government and would follow the athmic propositions propounded in the Bhagavad Gita.

He would tour all the villages  to seek the support of the people of T.N. He would also quit power if he does not deliver what he promises within three years of assuming office, of course, based on the premise that he would capture power.

Mixed Responses

Rajini's announcement has brought in mixed responses,  understandably with his fans going eccentric; Kamal Haasan welcoming it; Bitterness is not openly expressed by either of the Dravidian Parties, AIADMK & DMK,  while the welcoming by the later is subdued. Of course, using the word Bhagavad Gita, read as spiritual politics,  has enthused the BJP.  However, Subramanian Swamy has come out with an observation, many skeletons of Rajinikanth will now come into the open. Bitter opposition have come in from some fringe parties as Naam Tamiar Party.
 
The Bottom line

All of us know Chankaya's arasiyal but now Bhagavad Gita is brought into politics. Let us  hope to learn more on it in the coming days.

There is one more now to let us know that the system in T.N. is rotten but does not yet spell out what that system means. It is the voters belonging to the same system at the R.K. Nagar who voted TTV Dinakaran.

Reliance Jio to acquire Reliance Communications' wireless assets

The biggest shakeup in the Indian telecom sector took place today, (28th Dec, 2017 on the 85th birthday anniversary of Dhirubai Ambani, with the elder brother Mukesh Ambani of Reliance Jio  signing a deal with younger brother  Anil Ambani of Reliance Communications Ltd. The foremost message the brothers wanted to send out that the valuation was done at arm's length, meaning no compromise took place on the pricing angle.

RCom as entered into an agreement to sell its wireless assets to Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio, the Anil Ambani-led company said in a statement on Thursday. The transaction, which is subject to lenders' and other applicable approvals, will close in phased manner in January-March 2018

The proceeds of the mega telecom deal will be used 100% for debt reduction, RCom said.

While RCom stands to gain from the sale, the proceeds of which will be used for the company's debt reduction, Reliance Jio expects the assets to bolster the rollout of its wireless and FTTH services.
